I was able to spend three days on Orcas Island off the coast of Washington State. We visited the local markets, toured an art gallery, looked at plenty of pottery, but what I enjoyed most was relaxing along the coast. The absolute beauty of the views was enough to make me want to stop what I was doing and just pull up a seat and enjoy it. Listening the the waves roll into the stone coastline while watching the ferries come and go was just what I needed. I did enjoy long walks, drives along the long narrow roads, the views from Mount Constitution, hiking to Cascade Falls and all the little things Orcas has to offer. But for me Orcas Island is was a quiet place meant for reflecting and relaxing. When planning your trip, reserve your spot on the ferry and make sure to block out plenty of time to just relax. Our friend in Spokane, WA, has a good friend who owns a home on Orcas Island and offered for us to stay there. Well, yes please. How lucky am I to have a friend, who has a friend with a home that would be empty the weekend we were going? Life is short, take advantage of opportunities when they are presented to you. I will tell you more about our stay on the Island in my next post. So, we drove from Spokane to Anacortes to take the ferry over. Along the way we visited with our friends family. We stopped at a fruit stand to pick up some fresh peaches and apples. We spent the night in Wenatchee and the next morning visiting Leavenworth, which is a quaint Bavarian-styled village in the Cascade Mountains. Then finished our drive during the afternoon to make our ferry reservation at 7:50 pm. If you are taking the ferry be sure to make a reservation. We absolutely loved the home and couldn’t wait for morning so we could see the shore and start exploring the island. Over the years and especially in the past few years, I have been able to improve my photographs dramatically. If you are just getting started and would like to benefit from my trial and errors, here are a few tips to get you started. The most important tip is to just go out there with whatever camera you have and find a flower to photograph. You do not need the Canon D1 X Mark II and you do not need a botanical garden - you just need a camera and a flower. So grab your camera and get after it. My second tip when photographing flowers in particular is getting the proper sharpness, especially in macro shots. If you have one, using a tripod with a remote shutter release or your 2 second timer is going to keep your subject in focus and sharp. No tripod - then shoot handheld, being mindful to hold the camera as steady as possible. If there is the slightest amount of wind you will want to exercise some patience and wait it out until the flower is completely still. If you can hold your flower in place or depending on the flower clamp it into place to keep it from moving - give that a try. Keeping a fast shutter speed will also help to keep it sharp, even if you have to boost your ISO above 100 or 200. Try a few different settings. When you bring your shots up on your computer and you find nothing is sharp it will discourage you. So try a few settings to get your shutter speed up to 1/500 or faster. My next tip is lighting. The best time of day to photograph outdoors, no matter your subject, is just after sunrise and just before sunset. But that isn't always possible, so I find that with flowers, as long as they are in the shade, midday will work just fine. Midday sunlight creates harsh shadows and ultimately poor photographs. If you are photographing something as small as a flower - you can easily make your own shade. Use your deflector, a hat or have a friend stand to create shade. Take a look at Pinterest or Etsy to see what other photographers are doing. What angle are they shooting from? How close are they getting? Are they shading their flowers? Don't worry that you are cheating by copying others. I searched "Photo of Bleeding Heart" on Esty and got 205 results. You won't necessarily be original even if you try. The fact that you have the photograph and you took it is what matters. Finally, practice until you achieve the photograph you want. Take your time and get one good shot. Set up the shot, take your time, check your settings, check your histogram, wait out the wind and get one good, in focus, sharp photo of a flower. If you spend your day just clicking away at every flower you see, you may end up with nothing that is worth keeping. If you spend most of a day and end up with one or maybe two stunning photographs - that is a good day. I spent about an hour with this bleeding heart bush. I had to hold the branch steady and I took about eight photographs. I edited and kept this one photograph and I love it. I am a firm believer that there is beauty in your own back yard. I've recently moved to a new home and although there are acres of woodland, I haven't done a lot of exploring yet. Taking inspiration from a few of my favorite landscape photographers, I grabbed my snowshoes and decided to do just that - go exploring. The weather was perfect, 26°F and the light was just right. I had a wonderful time enjoying nature; however, I was not able to find a good composition for landscape photography. The time was not lost though. Scouting for a composition put me in a creative mood. Spending time looking, getting exercise, getting to know my local woodlands was all worth it. I was able to capture this photo of a small babbling brook with some snow and ice on it, which I think is very lovely. I will move on to a different woodland next time. It is only February so there is plenty of time to capture a snowy woodland landscape. If you are lacking something to photograph, take a look around in your back yard. You may be surprised what you find. I live where it is very cold and snowy five months out of the year. It is February now and I am running out of excuses! For months I have used, it's too cold, it's too snowy, roads are bad, the wind is bitter cold, blah blah blah… We have some warmer weather today but also rain for the whole day, so it's too rainy and wet was on deck for my excuse today. But the trouble is, some of my favorite photographs from my favorite photographers are taken in the snow and rain…. If I want to have photographs that capture the weather conditions, I have to get out there and get at it. The advice I hear over and over again is to just get out there and get after it. So I did. Water and puddles are always a good bet for capturing something fun. So I took the opportunity a rainy day provides and went on a puddle hunt. This puddle was under a tree, so the drops were huge. I also worked on my cinematography, capturing some cool b-roll that I will use on an upcoming video. Going on an African Safari will change your life! I would encourage anyone who wants to go and has the opportunity to go - YOU GO! Quickly you envision the lions and elephants...but before you get ahead of yourself there is a bit of legwork to do for this adventure. First, planning it will consume your life for a minimum of six months. (If you are an over analyzing, Type A, control freak you may want to block out a year for this step). There is a list of decisions to make and none of them are really simple. What country to tour? We were between Botswana and Tanzania. Ultimately getting to go to the Serengeti is what helped our decision of Tanzania. What tour company to use? We spent weeks on this - Easy Travel was Ranked #1 on Trip Advisor, they were priced right and they were quick to answer all our questions so we chose them. Private Tour? For us this was a must. We wanted the freedom to move around the vehicle and have control of our stops. If I want to watch the elephants for 40 minutes, it was okay to watch them for 40 minutes. We were about 11 hours a day in our vehicle - the thought of being with several strangers for that long per day for that many days does not interest us. We laughed and joked and made voices for all the animals - not sure we would have done that with others with us. How much are you willing to "rough it"? There are three levels to chose from. I can only speak of our level, "Comfort" which was way more comforting than we really needed - but maybe that is why we were so happy. You come into camp just before a late dinner and are up and gone with the sunrise. Our beds were comfortable, our food and drink were above expectations, there was Wi-Fi and recharging stations and we had hot showers each night. If your budget needs to be slashed, I think this is a good place to do it. What month to go? We chose August. It just worked for us. Do you want to travel before or after the safari considering you are already on the other side of the world? We were actually headed to Zambia - our safari to Tanzania was a side trip. But yes, you have flown all the way over there - maybe another African country would be nice - maybe take a two day layover during your connecting flight home and enjoy another city of the world. Nice excuse to see Amsterdam, London, Johannasburg or Dubai! So now what? Well, book your flights, wire your money, schedule your immunizations and decide if there is anything you will need that you don't already have. We did need to wire money to our tour company to reserve the safari. The credit card fee was ridiculous and we were not happy about wiring a lot of money - but this is where being rated #1 came in handy. If they just took your money the reviews would be all over them. We did get our immunizations and our Malarone (luckily, neither of us suffered any side effects from this). Although we are experienced travelers, Africa is a big trip and in my opinion warranted a few new purchases… so we bought a couple big travel backpacks and some packing cubes, a 150-600 mm Canon lens to capture close up photographs, binoculars and some green and khaki clothing. This will all be used on other trips right? (well except the binoculars which were stolen from the checked backpack during our flight home.) Once you make all your decisions and book everything the tough part is over and the anticipation can begin. Learn a bit about the animals you will see and the parks you will visit ahead of time. Read blog posts, like this one, so you know what to expect. Our safari was amazing. We didn't have any travel issues, we had an absolutely superb guide (which basically will make or break your safari - but I am pretty sure they are all great), we had wonderful weather and made some memories that will last a lifetime. That was five months ago and not a day goes by that I don't have a memory of it. I will be posting again very soon about the safari itself. The rains come all year long leaving the greenest grass you will ever see. Completely saturating the ground and creating beautiful little waterfalls to handle the runoff. With each passing rain shower, or torrential downpour as the case may be, come the most vibrate rainbows. Not rainbows you have to squint to try to make out in the distance... no, these rainbows are up close and bright enough to stop you in your tracks. All of this happens all year long. The locals told us we could have had the same weather if we had come in June. Our weather was actually quite nice, 50° F and a wee bit of rain on and off each day. There is a summer, but it is short and unpredictable, and way too many people try to visit during that short time frame. We had roads to ourselves, beaches to ourselves, seats at the pubs, parking spots and plenty of photos with no tourists in them, it was absolutely wonderful. While we were in Bally Ferriter on the Dingle Peninsula, Storm Dylan arrived. The massive aqua blue waves rolled in smashing on the jagged cliffs right before us. We were covered in the Atlantic's salt each day. The wind practically blew us over. What an amazing time to be there. So if you decide a trip to Ireland is in your future, think about taking advantage of the off season. Enjoy no matter what time of year you visit.
